What is Financial Engineering?

Financial engineering is a field that involves the creation of new financial strategies and instruments. Financial theory, mathematics, financial methods, computation, and programming are often employed to create these new instruments and strategies.

Some examples of titles that Financial Engineers hold: financial engineer, financial consultant, quant (quantitative) analyst, financial modeling analyst, tech consultant, and quantitative research associate.

Why do we need Financial Engineering?

Financial engineering is being used in an increasingly wide number of areas and sectors of finance. It is currently typically used in banking, securities, consulting, corporate treasury, and by quantitative analysts. Financial Engineers also aid in: trading, risk derivatives pricing, exotic options, and risk tolerance.

What education is required to be a Financial Engineer?

While the title “Financial Engineer” requires no exact background in education, many of those successful in the field have advanced degrees in Finance, Engineering, or Financial Engineering itself.
